Gary Oldman’s 98 year old mother is “very proud” of his awards success.
The 59 year old star scooped the Best Actor award at the Oscars for his portrayal of Sir Winston Churchill in ‘The Darkest Hour’, and his mother has responded after he thanked her for her “love and support” in his acceptance speech
Kathleen Oldman, known as Kay to her friends, told the Daily Mail newspaper: “I used to tell Gary stories about living in London during World War II and listening to Churchill on the wireless.
“So to have him win for portraying this great man made me very proud.”
Gary ended his speech by quipping: “Put the kettle on, I’m bringing Oscar home.”
Kay lives with Gary and his wife, art curator and photographer Gisele Schmidt, who shared an intimate snap of them celebrating his Oscar win in their kitchen in Los Angeles on Instagram.
Gary moved his mother from Bermondsey, south London, to an apartment near his home in LA shortly after the success of his semi autobiographical film ‘Nil By Mouth’, which he wrote and directed, portraying the difficulties of growing up with an abusive, alcoholic father.
Kay recently moved in with Gary, as he explained: “She can’t see very well and her hearing’s poor.”
Gary has declared his mother is his hero.
Speaking after the Oscars ceremony, he said: “I can remember holding her hand as she walked me to school. You have to imagine the postwar years of the early 1960s when there were still bomb sites in parts of South London.
“She was my first champion and always encouraged me back in those early days of trying to work out if I could make a go of this acting thing.
“I would see Albert Finney and the others on the cinema screen and they were the ones I looked up to, and she encouraged me to go for it. And I did.”
Guillermo del Toro and his wife of 31 years divorced secretly last year.
The ‘Shape of Water’ director has revealed he and Lorenza Newton who married in 1986 went their separate ways in February 2017, and their divorce was confirmed in September that year.
He told Mexican news magazine Reforma: “I separated in February and divorced in September.
Del Toro has now confirmed he and Kim who has written his forthcoming film ‘Nightmare Alley’ are simply friends and that she had no part in his divorce.
He added: “She is working with me, we have a nice friendship.
“In case some news appears, let’s clarify that I separated in February. I started working with her at the end of the summer.”
After being announced as Best Director, he thanked Kim, and his and Lorenza’s daughters Marisa and Mariana in his speech, but made no mention of his ex.
He said: “I want to thank the people who have come with me all the way Kimmy, Robert, Gary, Wayne and George, and my kids.
“And I want to say, like Jimmy Cagney said once, ‘My mother thanks you, my father thanks you, my brothers and sisters thank you, and I thank you.’ ”
Del Toro and Lorenza started dating when they were both studying at the Instituto de Ciencias in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Barack Obama is in “advanced negotiations” with Netflix about a series of high profile shows.
The former US President is said to be talking to the streaming service about him and his wife Michelle Obama starring in programmes that highlight inspirational stories close to their hearts.
Eric Schultz, a senior adviser to the former president, is quoted by the New York Times newspaper as saying: “President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire.
“Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better.
“As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories.”
One show idea could see the 56 year old politician moderate discussions on a number of topics, such as health care and voting rights, which he worked on at length during his presidency, and Michelle could do the same with subjects such as nutrition.
